I’ve Seen the Future of Apple…

Love the iLaunch or hate it, you’ve got to admire Steve Jobs hype machine. I’ve been using Macs for way too long now, and up until recently, every time he’s stepped up to the podium, I’ve expected something special. And usually I’ve got it. Blisteringly fast processors, funky looking new boxes, must-have consumer stuff. And until the last few months whatever he was talking about was available on the day of his evangelistic say-so. But something’s changed recently. And I’m not sure I like it.

Take the iPhone. It looks cool, it’s got some deadly features (the pinch and grab touchscreen is my personal favourite), and it’s available right n… oh wait, no it isn’t.

Apple TV is another one. OK, it’s underwhelmingly available now, but it took a little while.

Right now it’s Final Cut Studio 2. It sounds brill. I’ll buy it right now! Oh, it’s not available yet. Hmmm.

What’s the issue? Have you still some bugs you need to sort out? Or a supply chain issue? Or do you want to get the buzz out there before someone else does? I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be thinking about these things when it comes to Apple stuff. Apple stuff is, “I’ll buy now!” stuff. Not, “It’s available in the nth quarter” stuff.

So the hype machine seems to be getting slightly ahead of the products coming out. So now, and maybe for the first time ever, we know the future of Apple. It’s faster processors, quad and 8 core stuff, iPhone, the Beatles on iTunes and Leopard. Sigh!

As a fellow Irishman said once, is that it? I hope not.
