Yet Again, the Pros Get Left Behind
Finally, now the iPhone is out of the way, Apple can get back to doing what it does best; making personal computers and software for those computers. So, this week Apple made some key upgrades to hardware and software. The New iMacs are here; faster, thinner, and with an unusual black surround on the monitor. The Mac Mini got an much needed upgrade in processing power, quelling the rumours of its extinction (for now). iLife ’08 has arrived with multiple improvements, hopefully dealing with some of the issues I addressed here. iWork got a new spreadsheet application called Numbers, and .Mac has finally entered the real world with a much needed server space and bandwidth boost.
The new upgrades are very good news for iWeb and .Mac user in particular (including myself), though there are some reported issues with updating existing iWeb sites. It is recommended you back up your Domain file before you upgrade.
Again, however, I find myself wondering why Logic Pro is left in the doldrums, waiting for a much needed upgrade. I talked about a Logic wish-list here, and one of the main advantages I believe Pro Tools has over Logic (other than its universality, of course) is how it allows you to deal with multiple takes, either with the takes feature, or with playlists. One of the improvements to Garageband ’08 is the inclusion of this multiple takes feature. Meanwhile, the recent upgrade to Soundtrack Pro 2 included a similar feature for dealing with dialogue replacement. So here I am, once again, stuck with the inferior, expensive model!
Come on Apple! Please sort it out! There hasn’t been a major (or even a minor) upgrade to Logic in ages. It’s time.
